She finds herself wondering which moment it was that sent her here. While overlooking the lawn surrounding the house, she thinks of youth.
Her youth. Days filled with nothing but time. Time to live and be free. What she wouldn't give to have that kind of time again.
She drifts off to Venice, remembering the young Finnish navel officer who spent a night walking around the sinking city with her.
She vaguely remembers what he looked like. She mostly recalls how safe she felt while being held by him. His arms were so strong.
"what happened to him i wonder," she thinks as she wipes spilled chocolate milk. Last she had heard, he was on a mission in Bosnia.
The lawn is dying in spots. She attributes it to dog pee or broken sprinklers. She decides she doesn't care and vows to tear up the grass.
But she can't. He wants a yard. He over-waters and over-fertilizes it. He smirks when she mentions grass-cycling. "then he can have it."
